SWEAT Africa is the continent’s experiential start-up and venture festival, bringing together founders, investors, researchers, students, and ecosystem builders to pitch, mentor, invest, and build together.
SWEAT Africa was born in motion.
The idea took shape after a 14 km mountain run on one of the brutal routes linked to the Cape Epic, among a group of young start-up founders and entrepreneurs from Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Tired, dusty, and drenched in sweat, the group regrouped at a wine bar in Stellenbosch.
Over food and conversation with international angel investors from Google DeepMind and OpenAI, a realisation took hold: Africa’s tech and biotech ecosystems were growing fast, but the people building them rarely ended up in the same room. Founders weren’t meeting funders. Researchers weren’t meeting markets. Students weren’t getting access to either.
At the same time, February’s heat was impossible to ignore. And we were already running the BRAIN 5.0 acceleration programme with Open Startup International during the hottest month of the year.
That was the moment it clicked.
SWEAT became both a metaphor and a movement: Students Working to Empower African Talent.
What SWEAT Africa is:
In February 2026, we hosted a two-day gathering in Stellenbosch, at the height of summer, where founders, students, investors, researchers, and ecosystem builders come together to do the real work. Not to sit and listen. Not to collect business cards. But to pitch, mentor, partner, challenge, and build.
SWEAT Africa is a community accelerator. You show up. You lean in. You sweat together to build the Africa we want, and the Africa we know is possible.
