Built in Africa, backed in the room: SWEAT Africa co-hosts the Wits Health Sciences Innovation Fair
On 24 November, biomedical innovators from across Gauteng put their work in front of the industry partners, investors and funders who can take it further. SWEAT Africa co-hosts with the Wits Faculty of Health Sciences at the Wits BioHub.

The Wits Faculty of Health Sciences, in partnership with SWEAT Africa, will host the Health Sciences Innovation Fair on Tuesday, 24 November 2026 at the Wits BioHub in Parktown, Johannesburg.
The Fair runs from 13:30 to 17:00. It will showcase innovative research, technologies, ventures and translational projects, including selected projects from the recent Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship (BIE) programme. BIE winners will pitch in a short spotlight session during the afternoon.
The Fair is built for connection, not only display. The host team will make deliberate introductions between innovators and the organisations that can support development, adoption, investment and commercialisation.
At 17:00, the Wits Faculty of Health Sciences Prestigious Research Lecture follows, featuring Professors Bavesh Kana and Yahya Choonara under the theme Biomedical Innovation: The Good, the Bad and the Brave.
Dr Richard Gordon of SWEAT Africa will co-host the event and moderate the strategic roundtable after the lectures. The roundtable will bring research, industry, funding and investment perspectives together on the opportunities and challenges of advancing biomedical innovation. A networking reception closes the evening from 19:00 to 20:00.
“Gauteng’s researchers, clinicians and founders are already building health solutions for Africa,” said Dr Gordon. “What moves that work forward is getting it in front of the people who will pilot it, license it, fund it and use it. This Fair puts them in the same room, and that is why SWEAT Africa is co-hosting it with Wits.”
The event is open to researchers, clinicians, innovators, entrepreneurs, start-ups and spin-outs, industry leaders, investors, funders, policymakers, technology transfer offices and innovation-support organisations.
The Fair is supported by Wits BioHub, Wits Enterprise and the Wits Innovation Centre.
